Navigating Life Transitions with the Help of Therapy

By Saff Mitten

Change is a constant in life, marked by endings, beginnings, and everything in between. For many women, transitions such as the end of a relationship, starting a new career, grieving a loved one, becoming a mother, or navigating perimenopause and menopause can feel challenging and emotionally complex.

At Saff Mitten Counselling and Psychotherapy, I offer compassionate support for women facing these pivotal moments. Whether you're feeling excited, anxious, overwhelmed, uncertain, or simply in need of space to reflect, you're not alone.

Types of Transitions Women Tend to Experience

Life transitions often arrive with emotional complexity, even when they’re expected or wished for. Starting a new job might spark excitement and hope, while also stirring grief for the routine and relationships you’re leaving behind. Similarly, the loss of a loved one may bring profound sadness, but also relief if they had been suffering.

Becoming a mother - though deeply longed for - can also bring unexpected emotional shifts. Many women find themselves grappling with identity changes, loss of autonomy, and the weight of new responsibilities, even as they cherish the arrival of their child.

Perimenopause and menopause are also significant transitions, often accompanied by physical, mental, and emotional changes that can feel disorienting or difficult to understand. Yet this period can also be a time of liberation, when women begin to focus more on themselves, reflect on what truly matters, and embrace a deeper sense of self. Like all transitions, it can be both challenging and transformative.

Acknowledge and Validate Your Feelings

With all the different life transitions women face, there’s no “correct” way to feel or deal with them. Trying to suppress your experience often makes it harder to process. Instead:

  • Give yourself permission to feel without judgement
  • Recognise that conflicting emotions can coexist
  • Allow space for reflection, healing, and growth

Emotional validation is the first step toward navigating change with clarity and compassion.

Finding Your Footing During Times of Change

Transitions can feel destabilising, but small, intentional steps can help you regain a sense of control:

  • Connect with Others: Share your experience with trusted friends, family, or a partner. Talking can ease isolation and offer new perspectives.
  • Prioritise Self-Care: Even simple acts - like making a healthy meal, having a nap, or a few minutes of mindful reflection - can support emotional resilience.
  • Establish Gentle Routines: A morning walk, a quiet cup of coffee, or relaxing music before bed can anchor you during uncertain times.
  • Practice Patience: Adjustment takes time. Expect ups and downs and meet yourself with kindness and acceptance.
  • Seek Professional Support: Therapy offers a safe, confidential space to explore your thoughts and feelings without judgement, while also helping you to develop practical coping strategies.

Growth Through Transition

While change can be painful, it also opens the door to transformation. By embracing vulnerability, you can uncover new strengths, deepen self-awareness, and move toward a more authentic version of yourself.

Over the years, as a counsellor and psychotherapist, I’ve worked with many women who felt overwhelmed, stuck, scared, or unsure of how to move forward when faced with a big life transition. Together, we’ve explored the emotional terrain of change - unpacking grief, rebuilding confidence, and finding clarity in the midst of uncertainty. My integrative style, which is personalised to the individual, allows us to work at your pace, gently and safely, with space for both reflection and practical tools.

If you’re in the midst of a transition and need support, you don’t have to face it alone. I offer a confidential, emotionally attuned space where you can feel truly heard, understood, and supported. Therapy can help you reconnect with yourself, make sense of what’s unfolding, and begin to feel more grounded and in control.
